Prestatyn Cricket Club was formed in 1895. After various temporary homes in the same area the club obtained a permanent base adjacent to our present ground off Beach Close.
The land at that time was owned by Prestatyn Estates, and until it was purchased by Prestatyn U D C in the late 1960’s the club paid £5 pa. rent and received a £5 annual donation from the Aberconway family, the owners of Prestatyn Estates.
Once the Prestatyn U D C purchased the ground they served notice on the club to quit. However, after 18 months of arguing and petitioning councillors the Council relented and gave the club a 21 years lease so they could get a Sports Council grant to build a new pavilion. The lease was on the ground as it is now but we had to agree to a 50 yard shift westward from its original position.
The pavilion was ready for the 1971 season.
At that time we had two senior teams playing friendly fixtures, the playing strength was approximately 20 adult members and 6-8 schoolboys. We had no juniors though we allowed Bodnant Junior School to use the ground in term time and we provided coaching for them one afternoon a week.
In the early 1970’s Prestatyn became founder members of the North Wales Cricket League and played in that league up to 1980. The NWCL had grown rapidly and in 1980 ten of the leading clubs (including Prestatyn) were concerned that the standard of pitches and facilities were falling. Being unable to persuade the other clubs to accept a minimum standard the ten left and the North Wales Cricket Competition came into being.
The NWCC increased their membership to 12 and enjoyed 14 successful years. All the clubs strived to improve year by year, most started junior teams at u/13’s and u/16’s.
It is only natural for sportsmen and women to play at the highest level open to them and after the 1995 season the NWCC broke up. Colwyn Bay, Northop Hall and Marchwiel, arguably three of the best clubs in the league left to join the Liverpool Competition. Some of the weaker teams decided to go back to the NWCL and Prestatyn , St Asaph, Buckley and Mold then accepted an invitation to join the Merseyside Cricket Competition.
In 2003 the Merseyside Comp. Division 1 and the Southport League joined together and were named the Merseyside & Southport Cricket Alliance. This new league then became part of the pyramid system of which the Liverpool Competition Premier League is the apex.
Prestatyn won the league championship in 2005 and were promoted to Division 1 of the Liverpool Competition for the 2006 season.
Following an exciting 2 seasons in Division 1, PCC gained promotion to the illustrious ECB Premier Division of the LiverpoolComp in 2007 by finishing runners up of the 1st Division in a thrilling game on the last day of the season. PCC went on to finish a creditable 9th in their first season in the Premier Division, one we certainly would have said yes to at the start of the season.
Off the field PCC gained Clubmark accreditation in November 2007, and nowi ncreasingly have to think about business matters off the field as well as on it. Our Junior section now incorporates children aged from 5 - 15, and we have had successes putting talented players into the regional N E wales squads and also the national Wales squad.
2010 will see PCC celebrate 115 years of cricket -a time of great change and more changes still to come!
